For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.
— Ezra 7:10
Ezra lived in a difficult time: many of the people of Israel were exiled and enslaved, the great Temple was in ruins, the walls of Jerusalem were broken. But for him the first priority was to study the Word of God — and do so not just to puff himself up with knowledge, but to do it — to follow God's commandments — and to teach what he learned to others.
Here at All Souls' we try to follow the example of Ezra. We believe that we honor God by studying His Word, and by learning the stories of those who have preceded us in the faith, and by understanding the liturgies (themselves drawn almost wholly from Scripture) by which we worship Him. We study so that we can worship God more richly, obey Him more consistently, and make the Good News of Jesus Christ known to others. Our Sunday school classes, mid-week evening programs, and bible studies seek to create a community of lifelong learners.
